Facts about Bald Head Island:
Bald Head
Island is located off the Southeast Coast of North
Carolina, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. It
is accessible by a 30 minute ferry boat ride or private boat from
the town of Southport. Once you are there, it can be explored via
golf cart, bike, rollerblades, or on foot. Many people do not realize
how easy it is to get to Bald Head Island.
It is not only easy, it is fun!
The island
is approximately 14,000 acres in size. There are 14 miles of beaches,
800 acres of Maritime forest, and 10,000 acres of salt marshes,
creeks and freshwater lagoons. In the middle of the island there
is a nature preserve to explore. Average high summer temperature
is 85 degrees. Average water temperature is 69 degrees and annual
rain fall is 56".
Bald
Head Island Club offers an 18-hole championship
course designed by George Cobb. There is also a pro shop, new gym/
workout room, restaurant and lounge. Next to The Club are tennis
courts, croquet greens, putting tees, 25-meter pool and a playground.
In addition to dining at The Club, there is the Peli Deli at the
pool.
The harbor has a full service marina with charter
fishing boats. There is an open air steamer restaurant named Eb
& Flos as well as the River Pilot Café that
offers casual indoor dining.
The Maritime Market, the new grocery store and Deli,
offers food, fishing gear, movies, ATM machine, newspapers, and
Bald Head Island memorabilia.
Gift shops include The Lightkeeper which serves java drinks, bagels,
ice cream, and now pizza. They also have a great selection of home
decor. There is also Island Passage (clothing and jewelry), Silver
Peddler (home décor and jewelry) and the Bald
Head Island Turtle Central
Store (clothing, toys, books, and home décor.)
Close to the Marina there is Old Baldy.
Built in 1817, it is the states oldest lighthouse. Next to
the lighthouse is a serene Chapel on the creek which has non-denominational
Sunday church services and many spectacular weddings.
From May to August, Bald
Head Island beaches are nesting areas for Loggerhead
Turtles. The Bald Head Island Conservancy, in addition to their
store, sponsors turtle walks at night and alligator and bird watches
during the day.
